Melatonin is a substance that helps your body understand when it’s time to sleep and wake up. Your body naturally produces more melatonin starting in the evening after sunset. That’s a way of indicating that you’re approaching bedtime.
Melatonin levels start to go down after sunrise, but there are various factors that can prevent your body from producing an optimum amount.
One of the biggest factors is the amount of light you’re exposed to. Studies suggest turning off screens at least two hours before bed to get optimum sleep but with lockdowns and work from home that’s becoming increasingly difficult to manage.

2020 research confirms these findings. The study, titled “Comparing the effect of aromatherapy with peppermint and lavender on the sleep quality of cardiac patients” found that aromatherapy diffusers with lavender can improve sleep quality significantly.
Chamomile is one of the most ancient medicinal herbs known to humans. A 2011 study, titled: “Chamomile: A herbal medicine of the past with bright future” stated that “inhalation of the vaporized essential oils derived from chamomile flowers is recommended to relieve anxiety and general depression.”
It added that chamomile has been frequently used as a mild sedative to reduce anxiety, treat insomnia and other sleep problems.
Chamomile is one of the most widely used therapies for promoting sleep and treating insomnia. The active ingredients in chamomile are chamazulene, apigenin, and bisabolol and its sedative effects may be due to a benzodiazepine-like compound in the flower head, according to researchers Janmejai K. Srivastav and Sanjay Gupta, in their book “Foods and Dietary Supplements in the Prevention and Treatment of Disease in Older Adults, 2015”.
Another positive effect of Chamomile is a 29% decrease in mortality rates, according to a 2014 study.
